JOHNNY FRIEDLAENDER (1912–1992)

Johnny Friedlaender was a pioneering 20th-century printmaker internationally renowned for his innovative mastery of the color aquatint technique. Born in Germany, he eventually settled in Paris, establishing a highly influential printmaking atelier that attracted students from around the globe. Friedlaender's technical breakthroughs allowed him to achieve rich, painterly effects that helped elevate modern printmaking to a primary artistic medium alongside painting. His celebrated etchings are held in prestigious permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
